Late into the evening and the small hours of the next morning, celebrants of Mexico's Independence Day flocked to Ruben Lechuga's "La Cueva" club to cheer on six candidates for "Miss Gay Mexico 2009." Miranda, the winner, will get to perform onstage for a year. Unsigned and unadvertised, this club is a haven of welcome in a still conservative society.
